Chamusse, coproprietário e editor do jornal diário online privado Ponto por Ponto, foi encontrado morto na manhã de 14 de dezembro por vizinhos que o ouviram gritar por socorro durante a noite, segundo Luis Nachote, jornalista local e ex-colega e amigo de Chamusse, que foi ao local e conversou com os vizinhos de Chamusse. Chamusse teve um ferimento na cabeça e um facão e uma enxada de jardinagem foram encontrados no chão, disse ao CPJ a coproprietária do Ponto por Ponto, Esmeralda Amaral, que também compareceu ao local. A secção moçambicana do Instituto de Comunicação Social da África Austral (MISA), um grupo regional de defesa da liberdade de imprensa, condenou o assassinato.
As ligações e mensagens do CPJ a Bernardino Rafael, comandante-geral da polícia local, não obtiveram resposta.
Além de seu trabalho para o Ponto por Ponto, que cobria suposta corrupção e política local, Chamusse contribuiu com comentários críticos ao governo na programação veiculada pela emissora privada TV Sucesso, segundo MISA e VOA Português financiado pelo Congresso dos EUA. Anteriormente, foi cofundador do semanário Canal de Moçambique e trabalhou como repórter no jornal Metical editado pelo jornalista Carlos Cardoso, que foi assassinado pelo seu jornalismo em 2000. Outro jornalista moçambicano, Paulo Machava, foi morto em 2015, mas o CPJ ainda não determinou se sua morte estava relacionada ao seu trabalho. (CPJ)
