A Comissão Eleitoral Independente (IEC, na sigla em inglês) da África do Sul desqualificou a candidatura do ex-presidente Jacob Zuma às eleições gerais agendadas para 29 de maio deste ano. O anúncio foi feito pelo presidente da Comissão Eleitoral, Mosotho Moepya, durante uma conferência de imprensa.
Moepya deu conta que a comissão eleitoral recebeu uma objecção contra a candidatura do antigo chefe de Estado relativa ao seu registo criminal, o que o torna “inelegível” para ser eleito para o Parlamento.
“No caso do ex-Presidente Zuma, sim, recebemos uma objecção, que mantivemos”, disse, para confirmar depois que o partido que o nomeou bem como os objetores foram informados da decisão que qualificou de “unânime”.
Quando questionado sobre se Jacob Zuma está impedido de constar no boletim de voto ou apenas de ser eleito para ocupar um cargo público, a comissão eleitoral esclareceu que esta é “uma questão a analisar brevemente”.
A Comissão Eleitoral Independente da África do Sul sublinhou que Zuma tem até 2 de abril para recorrer da sua desqualificação no Tribunal Eleitoral.
O ex-Presidente Zuma lidera a lista do partido político uMkhonto weSizwe (MKP), que é alvo de uma ação judicial movida pelo partido Congresso Nacional Africano (ANC), no poder desde 1994.
